After the close of the American war he was heard of as a sailor on a merchantman in the African trade, having a kind of reputation for feats of strength and climbing, but finally disappearing one night as his ship lay off the Congo coast. Science, already oppressive with its shocking revelations, will perhaps be the ultimate exterminator of our human species—if separate species we be—for its reserve of unguessed horrors could never be borne by mortal brains if loosed upon the world.

Arthur accepts his offer, and returns to England. According to one story nothing further happened save that the stuffed goddess became a symbol of arthkr for whatever tribe might possess it. Indeed, old Sir Wade had possessed an intellectual zeal amounting almost to a mania; his bizarre conjectures on a prehistoric white Congolese civilisation earning him much ridicule when his book, Observations on the Several Parts of Africa, was published. I do find this article utterly fascinating, though.
If so, the novel you are referring to is also related to a tale by Robert E. But it was Sir Wade who located a ruined city hidden in the tropical rainforest almost three hundred years later.

Surely the imaginative blacks had made the most of whatever events might lie behind the extravagant legendry. Life is a hideous thing, and from the background behind what we know of it peer daemoniacal hints of truth which make it sometimes a thousandfold more hideous.
